Mention the name Pythagoras and many people immediately think of set squares and aging scholars. Few would consider the life of Pythagoras to be exciting enough to warrant a Hollywood movie, but they’d be wrong. Pythagoras’ life is shrouded in mystery and intrigue and it all began on the verdant island paradise of Samos.
The infamous scholar was sometimes attributed with mythical powers, was often at the centre of political intrigue and became a notorious cult leader. The new film ‘Gates of Light’, based on the book written by Dr Mia Sperber, promises to focus on the battle of good against evil and the creative struggle between friendship and politics.
Greece is no stranger to Hollywood, with the likes of Mamma Mia, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Tomb Raider all being filmed on its shores. Greece is blessed with a wealth of character, endless days of sunshine and enough historical marvels to keep the most adventurous holiday makers happy. Often considered the cradle of civilisation, Greece continues to be one of the most fascinating and rewarding places to visit.
Filming is due to start in October 2010 with the beautiful island of Samos playing host to the crew and an array of well known actors, including Gerard Butler (Pythagoras), Penelope Cruz (Theano), Patrick Stewart (High Priest Khem) and Sean Bean (Cylon). Samos is the eighth largest island in the Greek archipelago. As a holiday hotspot, Samos benefits from its own international airport and yet the island still retains its classical charm, something many of its bustling neighbours seem to have lost in recent years. Waterfront tavernas, villages clinging precariously to verdant mountain sides and a deep sense of history emanating from the gnarled nooks and crannies within twisting cobbled streets; Samos exudes a sense of romanticism that tourists can’t help but revisit time and time again.
Christina Stavropoulou from Inkas Film Productions says, “Samos is actually one of the best islands for filming in Greece, as it retains the historic charm.”
Halcyon Hills property developer Robin Barrasford believes the film serves as another reason why those that visit Samos return year on year. Remembering his first visit to the island he says, “I fell in love with Samos long before I even considered its potential as a property hotspot, it has an historic charm that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else. It really doesn’t surprise me that ‘Hollywood’ has discovered this gem of the Aegean.”
Ruth Hargrave, Samos Office Manager for Barrasford & Bird Worldwide comments, “People arrive on their viewing trips from the UK and the second they step off the plane the charm and relaxed nature of the island instantly puts them at ease. There’s enough here to keep you busy, but not too much that it spoils the very things that make Samos so special. It can only be a good thing that the new film will encourage even more tourism, and educate people as to the many sights and historic significance of Samos.”
News of the film is already a hot topic on the island with local businesses eagerly anticipating the arrival of the production team. Deputy Mayor, Nikos Likos, explains “Samos is a beautiful island with so much to offer people. I have been working on this project for three years and am very keen to give the production team a fantastic welcome when they visit us.“
