The infamous scholar was sometimes attributed with mythical powers, was often at the centre of political intrigue and became a notorious cult leader. The new film ‘Gates of Light’, based on the book written by Dr Mia Sperber, promises to focus on the battle of good against evil and the creative struggle between friendship and politics.
Greece is no stranger to Hollywood, with the likes of Mamma Mia, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and Tomb Raider all being filmed on its shores. Filming is due to start in October 2010 with the beautiful island of Samos playing host to the crew and an array of well known actors, including Gerard Butler (Pythagoras), Penelope Cruz (Theano), Patrick Stewart (High Priest Khem) and Sean Bean (Cylon). Samos is the eighth largest island in the Greek archipelago. As a holiday hotspot, Samos benefits from its own international airport and yet the island still retains its classical charm, something many of its bustling neighbours seem to have lost in recent years. Waterfront tavernas, villages clinging precariously to verdant mountain sides and a deep sense of history emanating from the gnarled nooks and crannies within twisting cobbled streets; Samos exudes a sense of romanticism that tourists can’t help but revisit time and time again.
